After a great 16 year career in the corporate world, I decided to make a 180-degree career change and follow my passion as an entrepreneur in the Fashion Industry. Taking the leap was both exciting and scary at the same time but I had always read and believed that you should live your life fully and take calculated risks when you can. Second, to relocating to Atlanta in 1992, this was definitely the biggest risk for me.

This is how VLU STYLE was born.

The "why" to my brand goes much deeper than just selling apparel & accessories.

As far as I can remember my weight has fluctuated. I’ve been a size 8 and a size 18.  I’ve been told  “Oh you can’t wear THAT, and  I’m sorry we don’t have anything in the store that will fit you. If we were cavemen, it wouldn’t matter because we wouldn’t need clothes but we’re not.

The fact is society expects us to look a certain way and I did not feel that I was meeting those expectations.

When my weight was up,  I didn’t feel very good about myself. My self-confidence was tremendously affected. Mostly because I couldn’t find anything that fit me right… gaining weight in places that made it almost impossible to buy a size whatever and have it fit right all over. Oh if only I could direct where I wanted the weight to go! (and) It was discouraging going into stores that didn’t carry my size. Not only that, I was tired of being directed to a plus size section.

Yes, we are exiled to a section,  on a different floor!  The "section" was usually really ugly, boxy and matronly. And if I did find what I thought was my size, it was not true to size. AKA marked a size 1X really a size Large. So frustrating.

At one point of my career when I sold industrial electrical components, I had to wear khaki’s and  Mens logo’d golf shirts. Everyday. (Oh that was a good look).

Self-confidence is SO important just to function in your day to day life. Imagine having to stand in front of 100 people and present, or go into a courthouse and fight a case, or close that big deal feeling insecure about how you look, not being able to bring you’re A game?

For me, it was paralyzing. I would avoid at all costs;  meetings, calling on new customers. Business mixers? FORGET IT….It was a disaster for me professionally. My business suffered and I was depressed,. I won’t even go into the personal side of it.

So a few years ago I finally decided I was tired of standing in my own way. I knew I was talented, I could be very successful I just needed to fix the situation. I can confidently say that I am an expert in what styles look best on different body types. The cut, neckline, types of fabric.  Its kind of a long story but it’s the WHY of the Brand.

In 2014 I set out to develop my apparel line.

Today I get up every day and I show up and try to bring my A game wherever I go. And when I lose a few pounds thats great too because ’ll have the same fabulous apparel options just in a smaller size.

So remember It’s not only about selling clothes. It’s about having options for clothing that fit you well & give you self-confidence whether you are a size 2 or a size 22. Paired with fabulous accessories.

Bottom line, When you look good, you feel good which equates to showing up.  #CONFIDENCEFACTOR
